Menthol is the most famous ingredient of peppermint essential oil. It causes a pleasant feeling of cooling and reduces painful irritation, and momentarily removes pain and cramps in the muscles. There are certain receptors in the mouth that respond to the menthol, therefore, this ingredient creates a feeling of refreshment. It is a great addition to toothpaste, mouthwashes, chewing gums, breathing agents, tobacco substitutes, throat lozenges, ointments, and creams to relieve muscle pain. Menthol also works against viruses, bacteria, and fungi, but since it has stronger antimicrobial agents, it’s not used for this purpose. The largest number of plants with a strong antimicrobial effect are from the family of sores (sage/salvia, oregano, basil, thyme) and mint.

A pleasant way to enjoy the mint in the summer months is to make ice cubes with a peppermint flavor. You can do this by placing the mint leaves in a bowl for ice making and pour water over them. Another way is to have a Mojito instead. 🙂

We wrote about some of the most important benefits of peppermint essential oil in our last article and

Peppermint essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the fresh above-ground parts of the bouquet. The specific scent that refreshes and cools comes from the most important active substance of Mentha piperita, menthol, but besides it, this medicinal plant also contains other useful ingredients, which makes its effect multifaceted and versatile, and its application very wide. If you are into aromatherapy, or just simply want to feel good and smell nice, then you will probably want to use a perfume made from essential oils. The perfumes made from essential oils, besides the scent, have a therapeutic effect, so that, apart from the fine fragrance, you can relax with perfumes, fill yourself with energy, and even purify the respiratory tract.

Indeed, essential oils help balance the body, mind, and spirit. When we smell something, olfactory receptors send a message to the limbic system which is associated with our feelings, mood, and instincts. Knowing that fragrances are related to our memories and feelings, we can accordingly associate them as a personal benefit. Each aroma and scent can create a specific psycho-emotional effect and provide healing therapeutic properties. All in all, perfumes can give us a completely holistic experience.

Take a look at some of the most used essential oils that can be used to make perfumes:

  1.  Jasmine Essential Oil
  2.  Lavender
  3.  Rose petal
  4.  Lemon Balm (Melissa)
  5.  Bergamot

1. Jasmine

The use of jasmine is relatively limited. It is mainly used for perfumes making. Its smell works down on the human psyche and also has the properties of an aphrodisiac. The aroma of the oil is sweet and relaxing. Jasmine essential oil combines nicely with citrus fruits, charcoal oils such as blue cypress and sandalwood.

2. Lavender

One of the most popular medicinal herbs spread all over the Mediterranean. Bulgaria is the largest producer of this amazing herb. The name “lavender” is “followed” by the Latin ‘lavar’ because it was a custom for the Romans to put lavender leaves and flowers in the water before bathing. Famous for its medicinal properties, lavender has always been used for wound healing and pain relief. Lavender has an intense floral-wood scent, its spectrum is quite wide, more precise it could be described as a floral, grassy, balm, woody with notes of camphor. The lavender essence is obtained by steam distillation of fresh flowers. Read more about this multi-beneficial herb here: Lavender Essential Oil, Usage and Benefits

3. Rose petal

The goddess of the Flora created a beautiful flower and it smacked the entire Olympus with its smell. None of the Gods was indifferent, but all of them crucified to give something to this gentle plant.

Aphrodite gave it name and beauty, Dionysus sweet nectar, three cherries of charm, and the western wind Zefir took off the clouds so that Apollo could approach it. And the rose from the touch of the most beautiful among the gods began to bloom.

One day, 5,000 years ago, rose found its way to humans, and her first earthly habitat was China. From there, it spread across all world gardens and then settled in soaps, creams, and perfumes.

Rose-based preparations tighten the skin, restore her youth and shine, and they also have healing properties. The rose petals bath is soothing, while the coats are excellent for tired and swollen feet.

5. Bergamot

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is one of the most popular raw materials in making perfumes. This little tree, named after the town of Bergamo in the north of Italy, is grown exclusively for the production of a fragrant essential oil that dominates many, both female and male perfumes. The most famous oil is produced in Calabria, in the south of Italy. Aromatherapists claim that it is of great help to people who are not interested in life and everyone who does not have enough self-confidence.
The fresh citrus aroma of bergamot oil, with mild floral admixture, is well combined with almost all scents, especially sandalwood, lavender, jasmine, and gardenia. Essential oils of bergamot are well combined with other citrus oils, from lemon to grapefruit, and a particularly seductive combination is obtained by mixing with rose or geranium. Perfumery bergamot is mostly used in floral, woody, and oriental compositions.

Imperial pear, as bergamot is also called, the fruit of the crossing of pearl lemon and Seville orange, improves mood and defends the body against stress. Modern perfume alchemists say that the morning is the best time of the day to use this perfume. This way, we will be in a good mood all day. Does this claim have a scientific basis? Probably not. Should we try it? Probably yes. The sunny scent on a sunny morning will probably elicit the sun on our faces too.

No matter which of these fragrance oils you prefer and use, all of them are simply divine. A couple of drops can make your day brighter and lighter.

Achillea Millefolium, also known as yarrow, common or white yarrow, is one of the most valuable medical plants for centuries. An interesting fact is that it got its Latin name Achillea Millefolium binds to the Greek hero Achilles, who, as a learned man, also used this herb to heal the wounds during the Trojan War. Beautiful yarrow also got the Achilles name because, as we all know, he was the greatest hero in Ancient Greek mythology, and he was famous for his strength. Yarrow is the herb that also possesses great strength, meaning it has multiple strong effects. Another interesting thing if you ever plan to attract butterflies, white yarrow is the perfect lure!

As a self-standing, perennial plant, it grows throughout Europe, usually along the roads, in meadows and pastures. It flashes throughout the summer and is read when the sun is the strongest because that is the period when this plant has most of its essential oil that can be used for many purposes. Sometimes it is colored blue, because of the azulene ingredient and this is the reason why it is used for sunscreen and oils that are protecting and nurturing the skin at the same time. In addition, yarrow is extremely rich in tannins, organic acids, bitter substances that give it a bitter-aromatic taste, vitamin K and C, resin, potassium minerals, and sodium.

What does the ”amphoteric” term mean?

A term “amphoteric” is used by the herbal experts and chemists to describe a substance that can both increase and decrease the pH of a solution. This is a chemistry explanation, in herbalism, it is used to describe a plant with seemingly opposite actions. For example, this ”controversial’ herb is known both as a hemostatic (stops the flow of blood) and a diffusive (blood moving) herb. This bidirectional action on blood flow explains how it achieves the multitude of actions listed below. Such an interesting herb, don’t you think this too?

Here are the 5 most effective white yarrow benefits and uses:

 1. Headaches

If you are dealing with persistent migraine and headaches, this herb might be the solution because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

“Modern research has confirmed the historical use of yarrow to relieve pain caused by a broad range of conditions. Yarrow teas and tinctures contain salicylate-like derivatives such as stigmasterol and beta-sitosterol that reduce the inflammatory process, which may accelerate healing. These compounds stop the formation of enzymes necessary for a series of chemical reactions that cause inflammation and pain.

Yarrow also contains compound designated sesquiterpene lactones, which reduce the action of pain-provoking hormones, the prostaglandins.” (Balch)

2. Wounds

One of the best natural bandages is definitely the white yarrow. It is safe and clear because it grows in wild nature. This amazing plant has its own antiseptic and a soft calming scent that helps soothe gravity’s sniffling victims.

Cytoprotective and anti-oxidant properties of this plant flowers and leaves might also be one of the reasons why yarrow is such good in healing wounds.

3. Fever

This time of the year is the ”flu” time. Lots of people are dealing with high temperature and flu. If you want to treat a high fever naturally-this herb is the right thing. It is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. White yarrow oil reduces pain, relaxes circulation and its great mild sedative too.

4. Digestive Tract

With its bitter substances, yarrow works on the mucous membrane of the stomach, thus stimulating the secretion of gastric juice, and therefore increases appetite. In addition, it works favorably on food resorption, so teas on the basis of this medicinal plant can help you with gastritis, colitis, cramps in the stomach and intestines. Potassium, which is an integral part of this herbal plant, solves all the problems that occur before and during the menstrual cycle.

5. Cardiovascular Support

Everyone knows the role of the heart and the whole cardiovascular system in the human body, but most people do not do enough to protect this key organ that has one of the most important roles in the body. There are many problems and diseases that can affect the cardiovascular system, and the outcome of these problems can be fatal to life. It is therefore essential that we protect this system in every way, taking into account nutrition, physical activity and the use of medicinal properties of plants that come from nature and contain the key and most effective ingredients that help preserve the heart and the entire cardiovascular system. Properties of yarrow plant can benefit our cardiovascular system, mostly because of this plant’s cytoprotectant and anti-oxidant properties.

As you can see, this multi-beneficial herb can help on many different occasions. However, like with every other herb, you must be careful with the usage, inform yourself correctly and consult with your doctor if you have any doubts.

Clary Sage (lat. Salvia sclarea) has a long history as a medicinal plant and it is also often used as a spice. The same word ‘sage’ comes from the Latin word ‘salvere’ which means ‘to save’. One of the oldest and the most beautiful types of roses are told to be brought in Europe from Asia after the Second Crusade by the French crusader Robert de Brie. He was delighted by this flower’s beauty and decided to bring it to Europe, so everyone can admire its beauty. But, there is another, more scientific theory. Namely, this plant is a hybrid of R. moschata x R. gallica crossed with the Rosa fedtschenkoana. Rosa Damascena grows in the form of a small barberry plum of 1-2 meters height, with whitish, hairy leaves and pink blossoms of extremely fragrant odours, made up of 30 latices.

There are various types of this delightful flower, but we want to focus on one of the rarest and most amazing one – Bulgarian Rose Damascena and write about it in this article.

What is Rosa Damascena (Bulgarian Rose)?

The flowers of the Bulgarian Rose, the rare and amazing type of Rosa Damascena, are known for their fine scent and are commercially used for rose oil which is used in cosmetics and perfumery as roses and “roses of concrete”. This fact makes these products one of the most expensive and appreciated ones on the market.

The water and oil lines are used in cosmetics, medicine and perfumery. We are talking about high-quality products that are appreciated all over the world. They are a by-product of the steam distillation process, where oil from rose petals gets extracted from the surface.

Today, Bulgarian Rose Oil (Rose Otto) and Rose Water are most often used in cosmetics because of their magical properties on the skin. They simultaneously control and balance the production of sebum, which makes these products universal cleansers, suitable for both dry and oily skin. They also hydrate and maintain the pH balance of dry and sensitive skin. Thanks to their antibacterial properties, they successfully help skin to fight against acne. These are also very popular medicine for treating all types of dermatitis.

This Rose’s properties are diverse and very delicate. It gives energy, refreshes and moisturizes the skin, relieves skin rashes and allergies.

It has been used for centuries, since the Middle Ages.

Melissa Oil growing and production

The plant has a distinct fragrant lemon scent and taste. It is a spreading herb with a short root-stock. The top of the plant cannot live during the winter, but the root is more sinewy. Melissa’s stems are square and branching, and they can grow 30-60 cm. Leaves are very pretty, they are heart-shaped, and usually 30-50 mm long, shiny on the top, deeply veined and wrinkled. Lemon balm flower is either white, yellow or pale blue. This amazing plant grows best in alluvial soil, excess water is harmful, while yields diminish in light and dry soils.

When it comes to essential oil supply, Melissa Oil is often sold as being diluted or as a blend of lemongrass and citronella oils. Pure Melissa oil has its own unique properties and aroma. The true oil high cost is justified due to its hard production, manual labor involved and of course, its unique benefits and uses. You need around 3.5 to 7.5 tons of its leaves to produce just 1 pound of essential oil. The final product of the herb, which is very sweet-smelling, is a pale yellow liquid with lemon freshly aroma. If you see somewhere that this oil is selling at very low prices, it means that it is not real Lemon balm oil, that is, is badly produced and doesn’t have the main beneficial properties this oil needs to have.
